How the emoji color set grew over the releases

Colors in emoji

Emoji come in a handful of colors, and the set grew over time. The first colored hearts were red, yellow, green, blue and purple, and black came later. Colored circles and squares were added in Emoji 12.0, which filled in orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown and the squares of each. Light blue and pink hearts came in Emoji 15.0. The result is a small palette that people use for aesthetic bios, team colors and moods.

What blue stands for

People often use blue for calm, water, sky and trust. Blue hearts show loyalty or support, a blue circle or square marks a team, a category or a status, and 🌊 sets a beach mood. These readings come from habit and context, not from a rule.

Color combos for bios

A row of one color works as a line or a mood marker in a bio: for example πŸ’™πŸŒŠ for a sea theme, or πŸ’šπŸ€ for green and luck. Keep the row short so the bio stays readable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the blue heart emoji for?

πŸ’™ is the blue heart. It is used for calm, trust and loyalty, for sports teams that use blue, and for support causes such as autism awareness. As with all colors, meanings come from habit, not from Unicode.

Is there a way to make colored text?

Plain text cannot have colors. Colored circles, squares and hearts add color to a line, and you can write your words next to a row of them, such as πŸ”΅πŸ”΅ Name πŸ”΅πŸ”΅.

Which emoji are in the blue set?

Hearts, circles, squares, diamonds, a book, a wave, a droplet and blueberries, among others. Names that contain the word blue are listed first, and nearby blue things follow.

Do the colors look the same on every phone?

No. Each system draws the colors in its own shade, so a blue heart can be darker on one phone and lighter on another.
