The text shrug and Lenny face to copy, with the shrug emoji

Copy a shrug in three steps

  1. Tap the shrug emoji, or one of the text faces. The text is copied exactly, with every character.
  2. Use the Skin tone menu to change the emoji tone, or pick the man or woman version.
  3. Paste it. If the arm of the text shrug goes missing, copy the Markdown version from the same group instead.

The characters that make up the text shrug: macron, backslash, katakana tsu, underscore and slash

What ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ is made of

The text shrug uses five kinds of character. The face is the Japanese katakana ใƒ„, which is a letter read as tsu and happens to look like a smile. The arms and shoulders are a macron, a backslash, two underscores and a slash.

Character Unicode name Code Part of the face
ยฏ Macron U+00AF The raised arm
\ Reverse Solidus U+005C The shoulder; the part Markdown eats
ใƒ„ Katakana Letter Tu U+30C4 The face, read as tsu
_ Low Line U+005F The shoulder lines
/ Solidus U+002F The other shoulder

Why the backslash disappears and how to keep it

Many chat apps and sites read a Markdown-style code. In that code a backslash escapes the next character, so \_ means a plain underscore and the backslash is removed. In ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ the backslash comes before an underscore, so it vanishes. Two underscores around a short phrase also start italics, so a second problem can appear. We tested three forms with a CommonMark parser: the plain form lost its backslash, a double backslash italicized the face, and the form ยฏ\\\_(ใƒ„)\_/ยฏ displayed ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ correctly. Discord uses Markdown-style formatting, so the same form usually works there, but we have not tested it in the app.

The Lenny face is built from combining marks

The Lenny face ( อกยฐ อœส– อกยฐ ) uses a degree sign for each eye, a letter from the IPA for the nose, and two combining marks, one above the eyes and one below the mouth. The marks attach to the character before them, so copying the whole face keeps them in place, and typing it by hand is hard.

Character Unicode name Code Part of the face
ยฐ Degree sign U+00B0 The eyes
อก Combining double inverted breve U+0361 Sits above the eyes
อœ Combining double breve below U+035C Sits under the mouth
ส– Latin letter inverted glottal stop U+0296 The nose and mouth
Typing three backslashes before the underscore keeps the arm of the text shrug in Markdown

Device check

The faces are copied exactly as shown, with the code in the tables. We have not yet tested them on specific phones or systems. If one appears as a box, email [email protected] with the character, device and system version. Emoji names and versions come from the Unicode emoji data file, version 18.0, dated April 30, 2026. Frequently asked questions

Why does the arm of ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ disappear in Discord or Markdown?

In Markdown, a backslash in front of a character removes its special meaning and is itself swallowed. In ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ the backslash sits in front of an underscore, so it vanishes and the shrug loses an arm. Type ยฏ\\\_(ใƒ„)\_/ยฏ and it shows as ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ.

What is the difference between ๐Ÿคท and the text shrug?

๐Ÿคท is an emoji drawn by your system, with skin tones and gender options. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ is made of ordinary characters, including the Japanese katakana ใƒ„, so it looks the same everywhere and takes the color of the text.

What is a Lenny face?

The Lenny face ( อกยฐ อœส– อกยฐ ) is a text face made of a few characters and two combining marks that sit above and below the eyes and mouth. It is used as a smirk or a sly look.

Do the faces work in a username?

Only where the site allows these characters. Combining marks and the katakana letter are often blocked in names. Use them in messages, bios and posts instead.
