The five skin tones
A skin tone is a modifier code placed after the thumbs up, so the choice travels with the text. An app that does not know the modifier shows the hand followed by a colored square.

Is π curt?
A thumbs up is the shortest possible answer, which is why people value it and why some find it cold. After a long message with details or feelings, a lone π can look like you did not read it. After a simple question, such as are you coming, it is a perfect reply. When the topic matters, add a word, such as thanks or sounds good, and the same emoji reads as warm.
π, π€ and βοΈ
The other gestures say different things. π means okay, perfect or just right. In some regions the same hand shape is rude, so consider your reader. π€ is a relaxed hello or a call me. βοΈ is peace or victory. π is the opposite of π and means no or dislike.
Using it well
- Match the weight. Use π for small confirmations and words for big ones.
- Mind the context. Some apps turn π into a reaction that notifies people, so it can mean a vote rather than a message.
- Pick the right tone. Using your own skin tone is common, but there is no rule.
