Superscript and Subscript Generator
Superscript and subscript text raises or lowers characters, like x² and H₂O. Type below to turn numbers and letters into ¹²³ and ₁₂₃ forms, copy the result, or tap ² for squared and ³ for cubed. Not every letter has a Unicode version, so the tables show which ones do.
- Superscriptᴼˣᵒᴬᵖᵖ ˣ² ᴴ²ᴼ
- SubscriptOₓₒAₚₚ ₓ₂ H₂O

Make superscript and subscript in three steps
- Type your text or numbers into the box. Digits and the signs + − = ( ) are converted in both rows.
- Check the letters. Any letter that has no Unicode version stays in normal size, so scan the result before you copy it.
- Press Copy on the row you want, then paste it. For plain squared or cubed, use the two buttons above the tool.
Which characters have a superscript or subscript
Digits are fully covered in both directions. Letters are only partly covered. This table shows the real code points for a sample of characters.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| a | ᵃ | U+1D43 | ₐ | U+2090 |
| e | ᵉ | U+1D49 | ₑ | U+2091 |
| h | ʰ | U+02B0 | ₕ | U+2095 |
| n | ⁿ | U+207F | ₙ | U+2099 |
| o | ᵒ | U+1D52 | ₒ | U+2092 |

Superscript samples to copy
These ready-made samples use only characters that exist in Unicode. Tap one to copy it. The first twelve are short phrases in superscript letters, which suit bios and sign-offs, and the rest are formulas. Next, you can pair it with a bullet point symbol.
Squared, cubed and powers of ten
The characters ¹, ² and ³ are older than the rest. They sit in the Latin-1 block at U+00B9, U+00B2 and U+00B3, so they work almost everywhere. The other superscript digits, ⁰ and ⁴ to ⁹, are in the Superscripts and Subscripts block, U+2070–U+209F. You can write a negative power with the superscript minus: 10⁻³ means one thousandth, and m² is square meters.
Chemical formulas with subscripts
Subscript digits make formulas readable in plain text.
| Formula | Substance | Subscript used |
|---|---|---|
| H₂O | Water | Subscript 2 |
| CO₂ | Carbon dioxide | Subscript 2 |
| CH₄ | Methane | Subscript 4 |
| H₂SO₄ | Sulfuric acid | Subscripts 2 and 4 |
| Ca(OH)₂ | Calcium hydroxide | Subscript 2 after brackets |
Superscript and subscript shortcuts
- Microsoft Word: Ctrl+Shift+= for superscript and Ctrl+= for subscript.
- Google Docs: Ctrl+. for superscript and Ctrl+, for subscript.
- HTML: wrap text in the sup or sub tag, such as x2.

Device check
The characters are copied as shown. We have not yet tested them on specific phones or systems. Small superscript and subscript forms can look uneven in some fonts. If one appears as a box, email [email protected] with the character, device and system version. More groups are on the symbols copy and paste page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type squared, ², on a keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0178 on the number pad. On a Mac, use the character viewer, or copy ² from this page. On a phone, press and hold the 2 key on the number keyboard where the keyboard offers it, or copy it here.
Why are some letters missing in the superscript?
Unicode only added superscript letters that were needed for phonetics and a few other uses. Small q and the capitals C, F, Q, S, X, Y and Z have no superscript form, so the tool leaves them as normal letters.
Which is better, Unicode superscripts or Word formatting?
Use Word formatting for documents: select the text and press Ctrl+Shift+= for superscript or Ctrl+= for subscript. Use Unicode characters where there is no formatting, such as in a bio, a chat or a username field.
Can I write a full chemical formula with subscripts?
Yes, for the digits. H₂O, CO₂ and H₂SO₄ all use subscript digits that exist in Unicode. Subscript letters are limited, so keep to element symbols written in normal letters.
