How the smiles differ
Calm smiles say friendly and polite. π is the mildest and can sound cool or ironic, π adds warmth, and π smiling face with halo adds an innocent tone. Bright grins say good news: π and π show a wide open smile, and π shows teeth. Big joy emoji say laughter or love: π and π€£ show tears of laughter, π₯° shows affection, π€© shows excitement and π₯³ marks a celebration. Pick the one that fits the message, and use a calm smile when you do not want to sound too excited.
Text smileys and happy combos
The older way to smile is a text smiley made of ordinary characters, such as π or the Japanese-style ^_^. They work anywhere you can type and follow the text color. The combos pair a happy face with a symbol for a short message. See also: emoji copy and paste. See also: hand emoji.

Using happy emoji well
- Match the message. A big grin on sad news reads badly.
- Mind the audience. π can read as cold to some people, so use π when you want warmth.
- Check the look. Systems draw the same code in different styles.
