Glitch Text Generator

Glitch text, also called Zalgo text, stacks combining marks above, below and through each letter so words look corrupted, like Ǫ̷x̸o̶A̴p̷p̶. Type below, choose light, medium or heavy, then copy the result. Use it for fun and short phrases, since heavy text can break layouts.

Make glitch text in three steps

  1. Type a short word or phrase. Long text turns into a block that is hard to read.
  2. Move the slider to light, medium or heavy, and switch the marks above, middle or below on or off.
  3. Press Copy result, or press New random mix for a different pattern from the same settings.

How much each setting adds

Every letter keeps its own character and gets a stack of combining marks after it. The marks have no width of their own, which is why they pile up on the letter instead of spreading the word out. The count grows fast: a six-letter word at heavy settings is 126 characters long.

Setting Marks added to each letter Marks per letter Length of a 6-letter word
Light 1 above, 2 below, 1 middle 4 30
Medium 3 above, 4 below, 2 middle 9 60
Heavy 8 above, 8 below, 4 middle 20 126

Where the marks come from

All the marks are combining characters from the Combining Diacritical Marks block, U+0300–U+036F, with a few from nearby blocks. The generator picks them at random from these three groups:

Group Marks in the generator Code points Effect
Above 52 U+0300–U+0315, U+033D–U+0344, U+0346 and others Accents, hats and tildes over the letter
Below 39 U+0316–U+0319, U+031C–U+0320, U+0323–U+0326 and others Cedillas, dots and bars under the letter
Middle 12 U+0334–U+0338, U+0315, U+031B, U+0321–U+0322 and others Overlays and hooks across the letter

When glitch text causes trouble

  • Overlapping lines. Marks may run into the text above or below. Leave a blank line around it, or use the light setting.
  • Blocked names. Many sites filter stacked marks in usernames and display names.
  • Character counts. Each mark counts as a character in most limits, so a short word can use up a post.
  • Reading and search. Screen readers and search engines handle it poorly. Keep a plain version of anything important.
Glitch text can break layouts, be blocked in usernames and be hard for screen readers

Device check

The marks are copied exactly as shown. We have not yet tested the results on specific phones, apps or systems. If text looks broken or is cut off, email [email protected] with the app, device and system version.

Frequently asked questions

Why is glitch text blocked in some usernames?

Many sites limit a name to simple characters because stacked marks can spill over the lines around them and make text hard to read. If a name is rejected, remove the marks or choose the light setting.

Is there a limit to how many marks a letter can have?

Unicode’s Stream-Safe Text Format limits a run of combining marks to 30 characters, and many programs cut long stacks well before that. Very heavy text may be shortened or displayed badly.

Why does my glitch text look different on another device?

Each app and font draws combining marks in its own way. Some clip the marks, some let them overlap other lines, and some ignore them. The same text can look mild on one phone and chaotic on another.

Can people with screen readers read it?

Often not well. A screen reader may announce every combining mark or skip the word. Do not use glitch text for anything that must be read aloud or found by search.
