Upside Down Text Generator

Upside down text turns letters into characters that look rotated 180 degrees, so OxoApp becomes ddɐoxo when read from the other side. Type below to flip, reverse or mirror your words, then copy the result. Letters without a flipped twin stay as they are, and a table shows which.

Flip text in three steps

  1. Type or paste your words in the box. Capital letters are flipped as lowercase.
  2. Choose a mode: upside down turns the line 180 degrees, reversed order only writes it backwards, and mirror reverses it and swaps letters that have a mirror twin.
  3. Press Copy and paste. Read it by turning your phone or your head, or share it as a puzzle.

How a letter is flipped

There is no upside-down alphabet in Unicode. The tool borrows look-alike characters, mostly from the IPA Extensions block, which has turned versions of many Latin letters. Some letters flip into another letter of the alphabet, such as b and q, d and p, n and u, and a few look the same either way: l, o, s, x and z.

Letter Flipped Code Unicode name

v ʌ U+028C Latin Small Letter Turned V

Related text styles are on the small text generator page, which makes tiny letters instead of turned ones.

Upside down samples to copy

These short phrases are already flipped and reversed. Tap one to copy it into a message. The frames around them are ordinary symbols.

Numbers and punctuation

Digits have no true flips, so the tool borrows characters from other scripts. Some of them come from CJK blocks and are more likely to be missing from a font. 0 and 8 look the same upside down, and 6 and 9 swap.

Digit Flipped Code Unicode name
1 Ɩ U+0196 Latin capital letter iota
2 ᄅ U+1105 Hangul choseong rieul
3 Ɛ U+0190 Latin capital letter open E
4 ㄣ U+3123 Bopomofo letter en
5 ϛ U+03DB Greek small letter stigma
7 ㄥ U+3125 Bopomofo letter eng

Punctuation flips in pairs. A question mark becomes ¿ and an exclamation mark becomes ¡. A full stop becomes ˙, brackets and angle brackets swap sides, and an ampersand becomes ⅋.

Characters with no flipped twin

  • Capital letters: a few capitals have flips, such as ∀ for A, but most do not, so the tool uses the lowercase flip for every letter.
  • Accented letters: é, ü and similar letters have no turned versions, so they stay as typed.
  • Most symbols and emoji: they are left unchanged in place.

Where flipped text works

It suits short playful messages, puzzles and bios. It is hard to read, so keep it short and do not use it for anything important. Screen readers may read the borrowed characters by name, which sounds nothing like the words. More text styles are on fonts copy and paste.

Device check

Characters are copied exactly as shown, with the codes in the tables. We have not yet tested them on specific phones or systems. If a letter shows as a box, email [email protected] with the letter, device and system version.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the text reversed as well as flipped?

Turning a line of text 180 degrees puts the last letter first. The tool flips each letter and then reverses the order, so the result reads correctly when you turn your head or screen upside down.

How do I type an upside down question mark?

The inverted question mark is ¿, U+00BF, and the inverted exclamation mark is ¡, U+00A1. Spanish uses them at the start of questions and exclamations. You can copy them from this page, or the tool adds them when you flip a ? or !.

Why do some flipped letters show as boxes?

Many flipped letters come from the IPA Extensions block, and the digits borrow letters from other scripts. A device with no font for one of them draws an empty box. Try another app or leave that letter out.

Can upside down text be used in a username?

Only where the site allows these characters. Many sites accept letters, numbers and a few signs only, so use flipped text in a bio or message instead.
