Copy a heart in three steps

  1. Choose a group: text hearts, heart emoji, text-art lines or card suits. Type heart or a code such as U+2665 in the filter to narrow the list.
  2. Tap the heart you want. It is copied and added to the selection box, where you can build a longer line.
  3. Paste it. If a text heart shows as a plain black shape and you wanted a red one, take it from the heart emoji group.

Text hearts and emoji hearts

The page has two kinds of heart. Text hearts such as ♥ and ♡ are ordinary characters that take the color of the text around them, so they are black in a black font and white on a dark background. Emoji hearts such as ❤️ and 💜 are drawn by the system emoji font in fixed colors. A single code can be both: ❤ U+2764 shows as a text heart when it stands alone in some apps and as a red emoji when it is followed by U+FE0F. The tool adds that selector for the emoji group so the red form is kept.

Card suits and heart ornaments

The card suit hearts are a pair: ♥ is the solid suit and ♡ is the white suit, and they sit next to ♠ ♣ ♦ and their white forms in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. The ornaments ❣ ❥ ❦ ❧ and ☙ come from the Dingbats block and were drawn as printers’ decorations. ღ is not a heart at all but the Georgian letter ghan, which people use because it looks like one. A short check before you paste: if the heart will be read aloud, a screen reader announces it by its Unicode name, so a long run of hearts is read heart by heart.

Heart text art for bios

The text-art group holds 61 short lines made from hearts, dots and brackets, such as ⋆♡⋆ and ╰♡╯. They work as dividers, sign-offs and decorations in a bio. They are built from several characters, so each takes more room in a character limit than a single heart.

Device check

Hearts are copied exactly as shown. We have not yet tested them on specific phones or systems. If a heart appears as a box, email [email protected] with the symbol, device and system version. More groups are on the symbols page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ❤ sometimes turn red and sometimes stay black?

The heavy heart U+2764 can be drawn as plain text or as an emoji. Adding the variation selector U+FE0F asks for the red emoji form, ❤️, and U+FE0E asks for the plain text form. Apps differ in which one they pick when neither is present.

What is the difference between ♥ and ❤?

♥ is the black heart suit, U+2665, from the card suits. ❤ is the heavy black heart, U+2764, from the Dingbats block. Both are hearts, but fonts draw them in different weights.

How do I type a heart on a keyboard?

On Windows, hold Alt and type 3 on the number pad to get ♥. On a phone, open the emoji keyboard and pick a heart. You can also copy any heart from this page.

Can I use a heart in a username?

Some sites accept it and some block it. Many sites allow only letters, numbers, periods and underscores in a username, so use a heart in a name or bio field instead.
