😢 or 😭: how much crying
The difference is volume. 😢 sheds one tear and keeps its mouth almost closed, so it says I am sad. 😭 cries with both eyes streaming and an open mouth, so it says I am sobbing. In slang, 😭 also means this is so funny, cute or relatable that I cry, which is why it can appear in a happy message. 😿 does the same for a cat, and 🥹 and 🥲 show tears that come from being moved rather than hurt.
Text faces for crying
The classic text cry is :'( with a tear drawn by the apostrophe. Japanese-style faces such as (╥﹏╥) and (T_T) show eyes streaming. They use ordinary characters, so they work where emoji do not, and they follow the text color.
